Comment fic meme #2
After the first round of
got_exchange we had a surprisingly successful comment fic meme going for a while (here's a list of all the fics that were written last time), so I thought it might be fun to do this again. (Like last time, it's posted on the mod account journal because I don't want to enable anonymous comments on the exchange community.)
I changed the layout to one that still supports comment titles. I hope it works for everyone. If there are any problems, please let me know.
A couple of rules, or rather guidelines:
- please include the pairing/character (and maybe a short prompt/kink) in the comment title - both for prompts and for fills.
- there are both show and book fans on this comm, so please warn for book spoilers beyond AGOT in the comment title.
- anonymous comments are enabled, but I'd appreciate if we kept them to a minimum. If you absolutely want to go anon, okay, but I'd rather we kept this as non-anonymous as possible.
- all prompts are welcome: smut, gen, romance, fluff, angst, het, slash ... anything goes.
- and the usual: be civil, no character/pairing bashing, no kink shaming etc.
It's perfectly fine to repost prompts from the last comment fic meme or from the exchange.
As with any kink meme, this is only fun if people also fill prompts, not if there are only requests.

Fill: Stannis/Davos from Ned's POV (hints of Robert/Ned): Making You Smile, 1/2
Ned is quiet as Robert roars one toast after the other, repeatedly interrupting himself to tell stories about his own exploits. They have won, yes, but one thing still bothers Ned as he looks through the large hall, frowning until he finally sees Stannis Baratheon. Ned thinks that Lord Stannis should have a place of honour at the king's table, as the commander of his fleet, the man to whom they owe a large part of their victory. But even if Robert invited him to his side, Stannis refused, and he looks like he is trying to stay as far away from his brother as possible without leaving the room.
It is hard to blame him. In all the king's accounts about the glorious battles of the day, Stannis is the one man Robert seems to forget with impressive consistency. Ned resists the urge to ask Robert what they would have done if Victarion Greyjoy and the Iron Fleet had not been held up, if instead of storming Pyke they would have had to face the Ironborn in a sea battle. He knows it is not Robert's hammer that has crushed this rebellion, but Stannis' Fury and the rest of the fleet, but he doesn't say anything. Instead he waits until Robert is too far in his cups to notice anyone but the giggling redhead on his lap, then starts to make his way through the crowd towards Lord Stannis. Someone should pay the man some respect for his deeds.
But as Ned approaches, he notices that the king's brother is not alone. A common-looking man in plain clothes is sitting by his side, in what looks like the calmest corner of the large hall. For a moment Ned wonders why Lord Stannis Baratheon is talking to some servant or sailor, until he sees the small pouch around the man's neck. The detail, and the story that Robert had told him about it, is so odd that he still remembers it, even years after he had first been introduced to Ser Davos Seaworth, when Stannis had brought the man back with him to King's Landing after his conquest of Dragonstone.
Ned remembers a reserved, quiet, almost shy man, though that shyness had seemed born out of a commoner's reserve towards great lords rather than out of any natural disposition. He does not appear shy now, sitting so close to Lord Stannis that their shoulders brush, leaning in so they can talk in peace despite the noise in the hall. Ned is too far away to hear any words - nor would he have felt comfortable spying on them - but Ser Davos seems to talk most of the time, while Stannis' replies are curt.
It strikes Ned as curious to see Stannis looking so comfortable. He knows Robert's younger brother as a man who seems to despise most people's company, who flees meetings almost immediately when he's not needed anymore, who answers even polite questions only with frowns and glares. Ned had tried to talk to him about his wife and his daughter when they had last met, but Stannis had barely said more than two sentences to him.
Yet he does not seem to mind Ser Davos' company. The knight grabs a flask of wine from one of the passing servant maids and fills Stannis' cup. Ned isn't surprised to see the man protest. Robert had had mocked Stannis earlier that evening for drinking water. That bloody fool doesn't even get drunk when there's reason to celebrate! But his protests are ignored with a smile and a toast, and Ned has rarely been more surprised than when he sees Stannis relent, raise his glass to return the toast, and drink. Ser Davos leans in even closer, until his lips almost touch Stannis' ear, then whispers something -
And Stannis laughs. It was such a short, odd sound that Ned wonders if he misheard, but the smile lingers on Stannis' lips for a second longer than the laughter itself. It is the first time in his life that Ned sees Stannis Baratheon with anything other than a frown on his face.
Fill: Stannis/Davos from Ned's POV (hints of Robert/Ned): Making You Smile, 2/2
That crazy fool wears the bones of the fingers Stannis chopped off around his neck. Ha! No wonder they get along, they're both bloody mad. It takes a madman to stomach my brother.
It is odd, Ned agrees, remembering Robert's words. He understands the logic behind Stannis' judgement, but he cannot imagine any man who would befriend the lord who chopped off his fingers, let alone wear the bones around his neck every day. But they seem comfortable around each other, Robert's surly brother and this smuggler who bought a knighthood with onions. More comfortable than he and Robert are these days, Ned thinks with a sting of regret.
He returns to his place at Robert's table, but after drunkenly calling out his name Robert seems to forget again that he's even there, his face buried in the girl's cleavage. It's a different girl than when Ned had left the table.
Ned sighs and takes a sip from his ale, his gaze once again wandering through the room. He sees Lord Stannis and Ser Davos empty their cups, exchanging a few more words before they leave the room together. They barely seem to be aware that they walk closer to each other than most men would, shoulders brushing with each step.
It pains him how much things have changed when a smuggler can make Stannis Baratheon smile, while nothing Ned can do or say will ever bring real happiness back into Robert's eyes.

Re: Fill: Stannis/Davos from Ned's POV (hints of Robert/Ned): Making You Smile, 2/2
I always thought that Ned and Stannis could have been epic BFFs if Ned wasn't Robert's best friend. As it is, Stannis would barely even talk to Ned. ANd he IS oddly adorable when he lets Davos take care of him. <3
Re: Fill: Stannis/Davos from Ned's POV (hints of Robert/Ned): Making You Smile, 2/2
Yeah, they definitely could have been. I do wonder whether that would have changed much though. I mean, it likely would have changed the whole course of the plot, re: Ned being made Hand. I'm not sure it would have changed Ned, personally, but it might have changed Stannis and the way he views other lords. What do you reckon? Davos taking care of Stannis is how it should be. <3
Re: Fill: Stannis/Davos from Ned's POV (hints of Robert/Ned): Making You Smile, 2/2
I'm not sure how it would have changed the plot or anything, but I'm fairly sure it would have been good for Stannis to grow up with a boy his age who likes him and whom he likes. To be the one who has a BFF who's as close to him as a brother should be, rather than to be the guy who always hears, "Ned is more of a brother to me than you are, Stannis."
Then again, Ned and Stannis would be the most BORING friends ever. ;)
I love Davos taking care of Stannis. I don't know if you've seen the fill roflskate wrote for me, but it's beautiful and it also has Davos being there for Stannis.
Re: Fill: Stannis/Davos from Ned's POV (hints of Robert/Ned): Making You Smile, 2/2
Yeah, that's true. Stannis having someone who cared for him, growing up, would have made all the difference.
But, yeah, god, what would they ever do? It would be massively dull.
I saw that it fill was but I haven't got around to reading it yet. I'll definitely give it a go though. Stannis and Davos are so good for each other.
Re: Fill: Stannis/Davos from Ned's POV (hints of Robert/Ned): Making You Smile, 2/2
Main reason I ship them so hard. Sometimes I realise how odd it is that these two are so healthy and functional and good for each other, considering the whole lord-bannerman-relationship and the fact that one of them chopped off the other's fingers. ;)
Re: Fill: Stannis/Davos from Ned's POV (hints of Robert/Ned): Making You Smile, 2/2
Yeah, Stannis/Davos defies all reason in being that effing functional whilst existing on such a messed up premise. D'aww.
Re: Fill: Stannis/Davos from Ned's POV (hints of Robert/Ned): Making You Smile, 2/2
I love pairings that should be messed up, but aren't. I mean, c'mon, Stannis is also old enough to be Jon's or Sansa's father, and he has fucked up power dynamics with them as well. ^^
Re: Fill: Stannis/Davos from Ned's POV (hints of Robert/Ned): Making You Smile, 2/2
That's true! But, somehow, it works. I think because Stannis is Stannis & he's honourable and also because both Jon and, actually, Sansa do have some power in the relationship, too, one way or another.
Re: Fill: Stannis/Davos from Ned's POV (hints of Robert/Ned): Making You Smile, 2/2
I generally don't think that unbalanced power dynamics are necessarily unhealthy or unhappy, so it doesn't bother me all that much. Also, Stannis has very vulnerable sides despite the power he has over other people, and the people he loves will sooner or later find out about those vulnerabilities. Which restores a bit of balance.

But even Ned notices the UST. :D

EVERYONE notices the UST. All of Westeros ships Stannis/Davos, except Selyse.

Re: Fill: Stannis/Davos from Ned's POV (hints of Robert/Ned): Making You Smile, 2/2
Out of all the people to choose for an alternate POV, Ned was a brilliant choice. He inherently respects Stannis, and even if he finds Stannis disagreeable and hard to be around he still sees the worth in him (overall Ned tries to see the best in everyone and not let prejudices blind him, which makes him such a rare character). And you made Ned a great objective observer here, kind of reminding me of some of Jon’s POVs as well.
Ned had tried to talk to him about his wife and his daughter when they had last met, but Stannis had barely said more than two sentences to him. lol, Ned is so blessed with a happy family life that he’s probably puzzled when Stannis doesn’t want to talk about his wife and child.
I would love to know what Davos said to Stannis to make him laugh! And as to all the slight touches and physical closeness between Stannis and Davos that you wrote in (a hair closer than most other men, as Ned observes), I don’t even think Stannis and Davos realize that .
It pains him how much things have changed when a smuggler can make Stannis Baratheon smile, while nothing Ned can do or say will ever bring real happiness back into Robert's eyes.
What a way to end! I liked how you layered the unraveling of Ned and Robert’s relationship over the strengthening of Stannis and Davos’ relationship; it’s great foreshadowing for the ASOIAF series when both relationships change to Hand/King, for Ned/Robert ends up in tragedy while Stannis/Davos is still working (well, unless GRRM is a bastard and doesn’t let them meet again…).
Re: Fill: Stannis/Davos from Ned's POV (hints of Robert/Ned): Making You Smile, 2/2
I think Stannis and Ned could have got along well under different circumstances, but as it is, Ned would still respect Stannis. And even though he doesn't like him, he would think that Robert is being too unkind to his brother.
Haha, yes. I imagine that scene must have been hilarious. Ned would have been all like, "oh, Stannis has a daughter now, we could talk about that :D" And Stannis was just grinding his teeth.
I wonder myself. I have no idea what Davos said, he's the only person who can make Stannis laugh. And yes, they probably don't even notice they touch and are so close. It's just what they do.
It's been said pretty often that Davos is to Stannis what Ned should have been to Robert, but I think the difference is mostly that Stannis listens to Davos, while Robert never listened to Ned. So I'm sure the contrast must have hurt Ned.
(Noooo, don't say that, they must meet again and rule the kingdom together. :()

Hmm, I've never thought of this, actually. I remember when I first read GoT and Robert says something like, "Ned, I want you for my Hand so you can rule while I whore, eat, drink, and hunt," I thought he was joking. But then Robert wasn't joking, and Ned didn't realize this until he got caught in the quicksand of King's Landing. Stannis actually wants to rule well, even he doesn't desire all the power that comes with being King. And Davos genuinely wants to help Stannis rule and makes some brilliant decisions in ASOS (well, at least I think he does).
(As for GRRM, I don't care as much about what happens to the story as long as Jon, Stannis, and Davos all survive and are happy...)
Re: Fill: Stannis/Davos from Ned's POV (hints of Robert/Ned): Making You Smile, 2/2
Robert was just generally unsuited to rule -anything-, let alone a kingdom, while Stannis was pretty much made for work and duty of any kind. Clear case of the wrong man being the older brother. ;)
I'm fairly sure Stannis will die because he'll fight for the throne for as long as he lives, and I don't see the series ending with Stannis on the throne. :( But that's what fanfic is for, right? ^^ I will just write tons of happy future fics in which Stannis is king and Davos is his hand and Jon his Kingsguard and Sansa his queen and everything is black-golden and happy. ;)
