Comment fic meme #2

After the first round of [livejournal.com profile] got_exchange we had a surprisingly successful comment fic meme going for a while (here's a list of all the fics that were written last time), so I thought it might be fun to do this again. (Like last time, it's posted on the mod account journal because I don't want to enable anonymous comments on the exchange community.)

I changed the layout to one that still supports comment titles. I hope it works for everyone. If there are any problems, please let me know.

A couple of rules, or rather guidelines:

- please include the pairing/character (and maybe a short prompt/kink) in the comment title - both for prompts and for fills.
- there are both show and book fans on this comm, so please warn for book spoilers beyond AGOT in the comment title.
- anonymous comments are enabled, but I'd appreciate if we kept them to a minimum. If you absolutely want to go anon, okay, but I'd rather we kept this as non-anonymous as possible.
- all prompts are welcome: smut, gen, romance, fluff, angst, het, slash ... anything goes.
- and the usual: be civil, no character/pairing bashing, no kink shaming etc.

It's perfectly fine to repost prompts from the last comment fic meme or from the exchange.

As with any kink meme, this is only fun if people also fill prompts, not if there are only requests.

Filled prompts:

Cersei/Ned; Rebellion outcome; "The Lion Queen"; PG-13 (Part Five)

[identity profile] lainemontgomery.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
They lie together in the warm afterglow, Cersei’s golden head resting just below Ned’s chest, the furs and linens of the bed crumpled beneath their bodies- Ned hates to sleep under the furs- “too warm down here,” he always says-, and he likes to couple beneath them even less. He skims his calloused fingers over the softness of her shoulder before winding them in her curls, and his voice is soft when she feels the rumble beneath her head-

“I’ve been thinking about your brother.”

A jolt of panic hits Cersei’s stomach, but she forces herself to remain calm, only tilting her chin up to look at her husband’s face. “How so, my- Ned?”

“I’d like to offer him a release from the Kingsguard.” He shifts a bit beneath her, and his discomfort is apparent. But he continues- “He originally joined under duress- he was just a boy, and Aerys Targaryen was a vindictive madman with a score to settle with your father. If he wishes, I would be happy to restore his position as heir to Casterly Rock and find him a wife of appropriate birth.”

And she cannot help it- Cersei splays her hand on Ned’s chest and pushes herself upright, green eyes flashing with pique- “You’re dismissing my brother from your guard?”

“That is not what I said, Cersei.” He looks at her and matches her temper with nothing but patience. “It is merely an idea, a courtesy that I wish to extend to my kinsman.” A pause, and then, “Perhaps it would be best if you spoke to him. It may seem less...confrontational coming from his dear sister.”

For a brief moment, Cersei wishes to scream and rage and slap her palm across Ned’s earnest face, taking care to dig her nails into the skin of his cheek. But when she searches his eyes, looking for suspicion or jealousy or accusation, she finds nothing.

When Lord Tywin had announced her betrothal, her Uncle Kevan embraced her and offered congratulations. Before parting, he’d said: “He’s a good man. An honorable man...a man who cannot conceive of dishonor in anyone he loves.” And then he’d looked at her with those sharp green eyes- Gods, how she hates the way Uncle Kevan looks at her- “That may well be his downfall in the end.”

She feels a squelch of something creeping into her insides- maybe shame? For she has not been able to give up Jaime, has not been able to keep away from the little chamber where they meet. In the early days of her marriage, she’d found it easy to justify- why should I give this up for a man I hardly know? It’s all that makes me feel complete, and I will not let it go...

But here is Ned’s hand stroking her face, Ned’s eyes, free of condemnation...this good man, this good king who grants mercy to the children of his enemies, who allows her to sit at his side as his equal-

He cannot conceive of dishonor in anyone he loves...and he wants to love me...

The passing silence tears the material within her- I won’t give it up, I won’t...but what a fool I would be, to squander this chance, the chance to be a lion in my own right...

She does not know whether the words are true, but she whispers them all the same-

“I will speak to him.”

Ned captures her mouth with his, and when she feels him smile against her lips, Cersei knows not whether to laugh or cry.

Ugh, I love everything about this, how Ned is not willing to kill children and how Cersei actually agrees with him. I think very much that that is her or could have been her if there wasn't this constant fear of shadows and enemies in court.

How Cersei is willing to give up Jaime, not for Ned, but for herself, it's also very true to her character. :)

Thanks to you and all your glorious fic Cersei might very well become one of my favourite characters even though I started out hating her.

Aww, thank you!

I think that Cersei had every potential to be a good queen- she's obviously smart and driven and interested in politics. And Ned definitely values Catelyn's opinion in canon; it stands to reason that he'd give his queen a lot of input if he were king.

And I'm THRILLED to hear that Cersei's growing on you! It happened that way for me, too- I hated her, and then all of a sudden, she's my girl.

GAAH THIS IS PERFECT!! (y)

I love Ned's desire to prioritize Cersei's council, particularly given what we know of Cersei's character and how limited she feels by her gender--it would mean the world to her <333

He cannot conceive of dishonor in anyone he loves...and he wants to love me...

I LOVED this line (well I loved the entire thing really, but I digress lol), Cersei's realization that this man means to really and truly value her is lovely--but I also really liked that you did not eradicate the breadth of her need for Jaime regardless.

I always wonder how things would have boded for Cersei if she hadn't ended up with someone who repulsed and abused her the way Robert did (hence only adding to her jadedness) and for that reason the idea of Cersei/Ned appeals to me because we know Ned would have honored his marriage to her as best he could *sighs*

Thank you for such a lovely fill for my prompt, seriously your writing is forever FLAWLESS!! <333

Yayyyy, I'm so glad you liked it!!

I was psyched to see this prompt, because Ned/Cersei is and will always be my Little Crackship That Could. I completely agree that someone like Ned would have been good for Cersei- with no reason to be so angry and bitter about her lot in life, she could have channeled her fierceness and strength into something really positive.

I was really excited that you were the one to request this, and I'm just sitting here grinning like an idiot at your comments. :) Mwah!

This is so great -- I've always thought this was an interesting AU to explore and I love what you've done with it here.

Lovely take on this AU. It's one of those forever lovely ideas this AU. A bit like what if Robb went to marry Margaery before Renly. What if Tyrell joined forces with the North and not the Baratheon/Lannister?

You really pinched well Cersei :).

That's one of the greatest things about this fandom- there are so many "what-if?" scenarios that can be explored.

Thank you so much for reading and commenting!

Beautiful. This is such an interesting AU, because her horrible marriage to Robert is what turned Cersei into the person we see in canon. I love how different she could have been with a man like Ned, who respects and loves her, but at the same time you still managed to keep Cersei perfectly in character, including her flaws like her arrogance and her vanity. I love AUs in this fandom because things could have been SO different, and this one is really great. :)

Seriously, I think this fandom is MADE for AUs. It's kind of a shame that GRRM disagrees. ;)

I love Ned/Cersei, and I think there's a lot of potential there (I think Sean Bean and Lena Headey would agree with me- those scenes they had together in the show. Oh man.)

Thank you so much for the lovely comment!

Pff, let him disagree. [insert my usual rant about how GRRM's stance on fanfiction is ridiculous] But this fandom is definitely made for AUs. ^^

Wow, this is such an interesting AU! If Cersei hadn't married a man who could never get over someone else, she might never have turned into the power hungry, paranoid, repulsive character we all love to hate. And Ned would try and love her like he eventually did with Catelyn, and love like that is what Cersei needed to get over Jaime.

Great job, I had fun reading this!

I love this AU, mostly because it would change EVERYTHING if Cersei married a man who actually tried to treat her with respect.

Thank you so much for your kind words!

I'm just a bit speechless. This is marvelous. It's like an AU I never knew I wanted.

I think Robert is a rubbish king, and I can't imagine what other than he swung a war hammer, seemed to recommend him at the time as a king. Now, Ned seems more kingly, but as Kevan so rightly points out here, he has a deadly flaw.

I love that in this Cersei gets what she wants--someone who will include her willingly in a share of the power. It shows Ned's respect for his partner, but it also makes Cersei into rather a different creature here, which is always what I wondered--would she be different under wholly different circumstances.

I love that they still take Jon in and Cersei actually accepts him unlike Cat. I think she might, should she have gotten the other things she wanted.

That she still can't give up Jaime, however, is just tragic. This is just tragic, magnificent stuff you've created here.

[identity profile] lainemontgomery.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I find myself coming to Cersei's defense ALL THE TIME. YES, she's unhinged and selfish and unpleasant, but she's such a product of her circumstances. I agree- Robert was a horrible king. He never really wanted it, and he never really tried at it. And the way he treated Cersei was inexcusable, no matter how difficult she may have been.

We've talked about this before, but I really don't think Cersei approached the idea of marriage with a "Screw this, I'm just gonna sleep with my twin" attitude. She wants it to work, and with a man like Ned, who would treat her well and respect her opinions, it just might. That said, I also don't subscribe to the "Cersei doesn't love Jaime, she's just using him" theory AT ALL. She loves him as much as she can love another person, and her entire concept of her own sexuality is wrapped up in him- she's not gonna give that up easily no matter what.

Thank you as always- your comments just make me squee and blush.
